Sapienza recently participated in this key conference attended by both leading space agencies and industry to explore the many ways in which knowledge and information are managed in the space sector. In all Sapienza presented three talks based on our experience gained and technical research conducted in order to provide optimised software solutions that allow the sharing of knowledge between ESA and its industrial partners.

The talks presented were:

Eclipse, an Emerging, Standardize, Modular, Secure and Affordable Software Toolset in Support of Product Assurance, Quality Assurance and Project Management for the Entire European Space Sector
This talk focused on the roll out and implementation of Eclipse both within ESA and industrial partners such as OHB. ECLIPSE provides an answer to the many faceted needs of the PA-QA and project management office in space projects, from planning to execution where sparse teams need to collaborate in a controlled way. Through its modularity and scalability ECLIPSE can be deployed as one integrated suite of tools or as stand alone modules. Simple, easy to use, with a low cost of ownership, operation and support.

Domain-specific Mapping of Relational Databases to Semantic Web
Presented the findings of our research into Semantic Web and in particular mapping semantic queries to a relational database (such as SQL) to enable connections to be made between various information blocks and thereby creating a knowledge field around the database.

Nonconformance Tracking System (NCTS): Supporting ESA's Nonconformance Management Process
Presented the status and deployment of Sapienza widely used NCTS application that allows ESA and Industry to track critical Product assurance information and thereby building knowledge about the identification and disposition of non-conformances of satellites components

Knowledge Management in Support to the ESA End-to-End Technology R&D Process
ESA presented their experience in this area through the use of the Sapienza ESTER (European Space Technology Requirements Document) application.

The conference was held at the European Space Agency's ESOC facility in Darmstadt, Germany and was attended by over 50 people.

Details on the conference including access to all presentations can be found via the Congrex website: http://www.congrex.nl/10C11/

Sapienza recently delivered a new website to the ESA Directorate of Human Spaceflight for the ISECG (International Space Exploration Coordination Group). The website was deployed on the Liferay platform using our fast turnout AGILE development process to meet with the short delivery timescale.

For the ISECG, the initial delivery consists of a public website that raises the profile of the group and provides a stepping stone to future collaborative activities. This will involve the deployment, through Liferay, of a networked environments that will allow the 50+ to access a document library, wiki, shared calendars, news features and blogs.

The ISECG is a voluntary, non-binding international coordination mechanism through which individual agencies may exchange information regarding interests, objectives, and plans in space exploration with the goal of strengthening both individual exploration programs as well as the collective effort. The website will play a key role in that tasks by allowing the placement of key reference materials in a single place.

Sapienza Consulting Ltd., a leading provider of software solutions, services and manpower to the institutional and commercial space industry, today announced it has been awarded a multi-year contract to supply the NCTS and RID software tools and support to OHB-System AG for their space programs.

The NCTS and RID software will further empower OHB-System AG project teams with the same tools that the European Space Agency (ESA) has used for many years successfully.

Michel Peter Gerhard, OHB Quality Management said: "For us the choice of Sapienza was easy, their software ticked all the boxes, it’s easy to use, powerful, competitively priced and follows the space industry ECSS standards".

Micheal Bearman, Sapienza Consulting Managing Director said: "We are honoured to start working with OHB-System AG, and look forward, in the near future to let them evaluate our new ECLIPSE integrated products suite, currently under development. The ECLIPSE web based software toolset (containing also NCTS and RID) will provide an answer to the many faceted needs of the PA-QA and project management office in space companies. In particular ECLIPSE will provide a document configuration and change management module, a risk management module, and action item module plus other add-ons, all rigorously based on the ECSS standards like NCTS and RID. I am particularly proud to say that this toolset will be appropriate and affordable by both SMEs and Primes in the space industry".

The NCTS (Non Conformance Tracking Software) is the tool of choice for the management of “non-conformances” lifecycle for all flagship projects within the European Space Agency (ESA). The NCTS is currently in use by the Galileo, all Earth Observation, and most Human Space Flight, as well as many Telecoms satellite and development projects led by ESA.

The RID (Review Item Discrepancy) system is web based software that enables end to end management and performance of reviews through the life of a space project. The RID is used by the ESA, primes as well SMEs in the space industry.

Sapienza recently secured through competitive tender a contract with the WMO to work with International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to produce online and offline versions of their 2007 Assessment Report on Climate Change.

The reports consist of four major volumes of working reports representing the current understanding on the crucial topic of climate change and will form a key part in discussions and the decision process at COP15 - United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

The primary work requires the conversion and compilation of the documents into a series of searchable and navigable html encoded pages. The entire reports comprise around 3000 pages of documentation in the form of text, tables and images in the six official languages of the United Nations.

To accomplish this task Sapienza is using its custom document conversion application that was developed for a similar project with the European Patent Office. The application works by parsing html exports from PDF and PDF based documents following a series of rules and criteria. This export is combined with style sheets to define the look and feel of the web content.

A follow-up task requires creation of a fully indexed offline version of the materials on DVD for distribution at the Copenhagen Summit.

Last month the directorate of Human Spaceflight became the fourth ESA directorate to adopt the Sapienza developed Non-conformance Tracking System- a web-based application already employed by 1300 users across ESA and its industrial partners.

The application is designed to provide a central repository whereby ESA can overview any quality control issues (i.e. non-conformancies) that arise during the build phase of space hardware.

"Nonconforming products can be of any nature, from the smallest screw to the final satellite", explains the ESA point of contact Raffaele Campagnuolo . "In fact, a nonconformance is always raised against an unfulfilled requirement, based on common space sector definitions derived from standards set by the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS). Hundreds of nonconformances are usually generated across the contractual structure of a major project."

In addition to Human Spaceflight, the Galileo programme, and the CryoSat2 and BepiColombo missions utilise NCTS and adoption is anticipated to extent to some 15 projects by the end of the year as it rapidly becomes the industry standard.
